New look?

Hi!  Going with my current addiction, I am contemplating a new look and format for my shop (or maybe a new shop all together) what do you think if I do my main shop photos like this and my detail shots with a high res camera? Don't you think these look cool!!?? Would you click on them though if you saw them in a sea of other items?  I think I would. Do the pics lack without an actual PERSON in the clothes? Any feedback is welcome!  Thanks!

{EDIT:  Ahhhhh!  I get it!  Some of you HATE this and some of you love it!  Most of you would rather see a human body in the clothes to be sure they are not doll clothes or whatever, and some of you think these are creepy and cool but inappropriate! I will likely stick to the standard! Don't fix what's not broken I guess? I am a little pout faced about this actually!  I have to admit I was expecting and overwhelmingly positive response (in my head these are brilliant so you can imagine the blow to my perception of brilliance, 'what? not everyone thinks like I do?'). But alas, honesty (especially anonymous honesty) is welcomed here, even if it breaks my heart!  I am happy that some of you do see my vision though! That's encouraging (and secretly I love you!)  It just stinks that negative feedback somehow carries more weight than positive! Why is that? Like one bad thing can blacken the mood! Oh well. I had better be hardy if I ask for feedback from these very honest and honestly helpful readers!  I went to art school (APPARENTLY NOT FOR DIGITAL IMAGERY OR DESIGN, Ahem, ceramics actually).  I can accept a critique.  Any more suggestions while you are at it about the blog or whatever?

I have my eyes closed, my head turned, stomach clenched, and my chest puffed out to take the blow if you want to swing. Seriously, I can take it. PMS was last week so I am all tough and gristled right now. Though I do challenge you to use at least your first name so I can put you on my list of RAW people to contact next time I need to come down a few notches.  Any takers ;)}

Think they look great, would definitely click on them!

They look cool, but actually a tad creepy, haha. Just be sure the tint of the picture doesn't interfere with the color of the clothing, though!

love love love these pics. the clothes seem kinda frozen and floating in space. the green space beyond :))) it's a wonderful idea!

I think they look cool, but I wouldn't buy anything unless I thought it was well represented visually on the screen. I think you'd have to include some other photos where the lens and filter on the camera doesn't obstruct the color or detailing on the clothing.

In all honesty, I would be less likely to click on those pictures...they look a little cheap...and I love seeing a real person model them so I know there aren't any funky things going on with the clothing item!

I like the effect but not really for a shop - not enough detail to entice me and it does have a little creepy of a look.

it works with the bright colors, but the dark/white clothes seem to become muted and blend in with the background. it definitely gives off a somber/eerie vibe, but that's not necessarily a bad thing :)

I think when shopping, I want to, right off the bat, get a feel for exactly what I'm buying. So seeing it on a person is helpful, as is glancing at clear shots.

But these do look sooooo cool, so I'm torn!

I really love the colours. It look s kinda psychodelic.

I think despite the awesomeness you should also post a 'normal' pic, to show the proper colour. :)

I would definitely click on them, the look like they are in haunted house :) Seriously, it looks a bit like as if they're gonna pop up from the pictures, less green maybe? Bu they look interesting, and different...

While these do look cool, it's really helpful to see the clothes on a real person.
However - I WANT that vest. When will it be in the shop?

They look great but it is really nice to see an actual person in the clothes. What editing software did you use to get that effect?

love love love the vintage-y images. when i downloaded a similar app on my android, i was pretty obsessed, too!

i would love more the classical way. it is more probable to click on them that way, because i want to see the exact color and of course you give them light and scale (when you wear them), which is important when you want to buy something.

i think the pictures look cool, but not for shopping :)

I like seeing the clothes on a person; it makes it easier to see how the fabric actually lays and what it looks like on a real person! I definitely think the old format is better.

I definitely think you should add this type of look to your shots, but should also mix it up as well. Also, I think I am more inclined to check out clothes when I see them on a person, especially if that person puts the piece together well.

this would add a lot of interest to the things you are selling and definitely get people's attention! great idea!

I think the style is very neat, and it would draw attraction to your items, rather than having them look like everyone else's, however...

I really think having a human body model the items is much better than having them on a dress form.

And the super green background (as in the 3rd picture, white dress - it isn't so pretty. If you could keep them lighter, it would look nice. Even if you had a backdrop it would be nice. :)

I dont think that green overlay looks good at all :( It's like something from a horror film. I'm pretty experienced with photoshop and i'm studying graphic design, and that looks unprofessional/trying to hard, you know? If i were a customer, i wouldn't really enjoy browsing through, sorry!

I appreciate the effect, but when I'm shopping online I'm drawn to clean, clear photos with true colors and neutral backgrounds.

I also have to say, most respectfully, that I adore your blog but I don't care for your recent pictures that have the "vintage" effects. They just don't do the clothes or setting justice, the two things that make your blog so terrifically unique.

stylenuggets said...

I do think the clothes look better on a person. Besides you make a really good (pretty) model so why not show us how it looks on you?

Jane said...

Yeah sorry, I really do think they look a little too attic-y for me! I wish I could tell you differently, but I'd be much less likely to buy things.

I really like the Hipstamatic versions! They're more unique and stand out more. Though I may be a little bit biased, because I too am obsessed with that app! :)

Those pieces look beautiful. I like the effect of the green. The only thing would be in a few of the photos it is a little dim to see the dresses clearly. My fave photo is the navy? dress with the white collar..stunning. I love your shorts on the previous post too, so cute!

as a customer and avid fan of yours, I would have to say I like the modern pics best, especially for buying new items. Also you make the clothes look a million percent better, I get styling ideas from u. That's why big labels use darling beauties like yourself, it sells! This is neat every once in a while, not always. Also my name is Danielle, I don't have a google accnt so posting as anonymous but not. I will always love your stuff though! You are brilliant!

Oh I really like the vintage feel of these shots, will be great for your store I think!

Jennifer said...

Personally, I LOVE this style of photography. To be quite candid, I think that gives your items a more vintage appeal photographed like that. I think you ought to give it a try and see how your customers respond. Maybe like a week trial? Just because some folks don't respond well doesn't mean that others won't. You could possibly land NEW clients! I would absolutely click on these photos....and why? Because they are outside the realm of norm. I value creativity, so I say GO FOR IT! If it makes you happy and you like the look, then do it. Follow your instincts :)

I think this effect is amazing, but perhaps it would be good to mix it up with more traditional shots as well. Especially for the shop, because as some girls have mentioned, it's hard to get a feel for the true color of the item this way. I do love to see you modeling the items, but I don't think it's necessary for every single piece. I can't imagine how exhausting it must be to feel the need to do that.

In other news, I die for the band jacket and that pink lacy dress. When you gonna list those beauties??

I really like this effect - I think that your idea of using one photo in this style as an eye-grabber, then backing that up with a bunch of hi-res, true-to-color photos showing garment details is great. The altered photos really stand out and have a great deal of visual interest: if you use them consistently, you'll create a visual 'brand' for your shop that will make your listings stand out and be easy to associate.

I actually like seeing the garments on dress forms as much as or more than on a person. That might be my background in museology talking, though.

jadie said...

i think a lot of people are misunderstanding. you would still have the hi-res, modeled photos in addition to these, right? these would just be first; the ones that come up in searches. that's how i took it, anyway, and i think it's a GREAT idea. it will definitely differentiate yourself in the search engine. i would totally click on them. even if i couldn't tell what it was at first, i would still click to see your other images.
i say GO FOR IT! i mean, it can't hurt to try!

Kimberellie said...

Oh, I LOVE these. I totally agree with you and was expecting everyone would (until I read further into the dark bold writing). I would SO more likely click on these.

But I guess we are not in the majority. And the majority IS who you are selling too.

Though have you considered making a poll on your page about this to drag out the opinions of the other people who go to your site (but may not comment?).

Like you I can't believe that everyone isn't gung hoo on this! (is that how you spell/say that expression?)

Also, I missed the census- but I have to tally a vote for the treated photos.

I am, however, a huge sucker for the photo treatments. So yes, I am completely bias.

But I think you have a great idea with these as the main pics, and hi-rez deets (with people, yes!) to back them up.

I'd click that.

I say leave the shots as standard. I once purchased a piece on ETSY and because the seller desaturated her photos for aesthetic, I was really disappointed with the actual color of the product.

Unknown said...

I'm way late on this, but I find Hipstamatic obnoxious. 1) They aren't effective as advertisements for your pieces. 2) The vintage style of the photos certainly is apt for vintage clothing, but they become more about the photos than the clothing you're trying to sell.

3) I also minored in photography as an undergrad--sort of specializing in the albumen process--and I find the Hipstamatic app kind of offensive. So much of what I love about alternative processes is tied to their reference to the handmade, DIY and the element of chance, and I resent the idea that my interest in alternative processes and toy cameras is mere fashion. I feel like the app trivializes alt processes and their aesthetics.

Sorry for the rant, but I've been waiting to talk about this. And my name is Angela, btw, and it's okay to tell me if I'm taking this too seriously.

I think that these are very beautiful, ethereal and artistic images. That being said, I would likely not click through on them on Etsy. When I shop online, I like to see exactly what I'm getting, not an artist rendering. I like to see the true color, get an idea of how the garment drapes, etc. With that effect on the pictures, it's difficult to get a sense of what they look like.

Honestly, I really like the style of photos you use o your Etsy shop currently. I think they have a good sense of personality, and they show the items off well.
