Its personal

Sorry!  It's early again and there is just not enough light (well its still night time for most) so my flash sort of washed me out here a bit.  I just have to take care of most of this blogging business before 7:30 each day if I want to make it a priority.

When I got dressed today I was thinking, "I just want something that is EXACTLY me."  I have a formula to getting dressed I have decided and I tend to use the formula over and over with different prints and items each time.  So here is what I have noticed:  Basic neutral like gray or black with three hits of the same color spread over the outfit in accessories.  My Favorite colors together are Gray and warm Leather Rust colors, so there you go, blaaaaaaa, bam , bam , bam.  I think that I can safely call this my signature style.  I feel completely comfortable here, natural makeup, wavy hair, side swept bangs, and my triple punch of brown on gray.

I have noticed other people's signatures as well.  Some people's are very distinct, and in fact, if I saw their clothes laid out on a bed I think I would be able to say "oh thats 'So and So' in the shower!" (ya, like I happened to walk into their hotel room or something by mistake.  Sorry it's the only example of finding someone's things laid on a bed that I can think of) Take Ru. Kurarin of Equivalent Trade for example.  She dresses differently everyday, but almost always in a black and white color palette, looser layers, culottes with tights or long socks, menswear style shoes or black boots, military jackets. . . I mean she always just looks like her.  She has found a formula that she feels herself in and you can tell.  AND the confidence of her style has even rubbed off on me a bit.  While I was shopping at the thrift stores last week I found these black, loose fabric, overall pants (from the 90's I think) and HAD to get them, all the while thinking "this is sooooo R Kurarin."  They are an item I would not have normally purchased since they are not old enough to sell on Esty, but I wanted them for myself and trusted my instincts, influenced by her.  I will be doing a post on them soon.

I think I will begin highlighting other bloggers personal styles pretty often now.  MY personal style has been so influenced by others that I can barely call it my own sometimes!  I will try to post an outfit that was influenced by the person and give a summary of why.  Sound good?  Does to me.

I love gray. I love the color, and I love how I feel in gray. Its a comfort color for me because it somehow feels slightly like gray sweat pants, even if it is a dress.

By the way, where do you get your high socks? Are they American Apparel?

Oh my goodness, I just adore this outfit...and your style! I just started following your blog a few weeks ago and I'm so happy I did...warm, creative and inspiring. Thank you!

I love this look on you and I totally know what you mean about personal style. I can tell that this is something you feel represents you not only because I feel like it exudes your personality, but also you look comfy. Which to me is key!

This is exactly the kind of belt I want for summer. I also love how you mix a warmer tan with a cooler grey. I'm going to have to try it.

I know some people think it's boring to have a signature style but in my view there's nothing wrong with being comfortable with certain elements and feel because it just means you have a strong sense of who you are.

Where I am now it's 12.30 in the morning and I'm really tired but I can't help smiling. I just never had somebody really see me before.

I'm excited to see you in your new purchase and your new idea sounds fabulous. I remember how in class we used to say that there are no original ideas because we are all inspired and influenced by other people. Sometimes it makes me feel a bit helpless, but today I feel like it's a connection.

Uh oh! I really like those gray high socks! They look comfy.

I adore grey and I love that cardigan, it looks really comfortable. I don't think I can tell you enough how I love the way you accent with your accessories and break up the neutrals.

You know, I have grey socks just like that, I might just have to wear them sometime... (they were a gift so they're just lying about, being pampered!)

Very true, it's great to recognize your own style! Although sometimes it does you good to just get out of your "comfort zone" and wear something totally different. Still, I'm all in for wearing just the things you want to wear and what's totally you, and not just some fleeting fashion trend.

Your so cute in these pics btw, you look like one of those old-fashioned porcelain dolls! :)

Love the rust and grey combination--soft and pretty, but also warm and strong...like a cozy cup of apple cider!I have those very same tall gray socks--I'm wearing them right now over mustard colored tights!

You know whats funny? I saw the pic before the words and I said to myself, oh my gosh that outfit just seems like HER, like she was made for that outfit LOL!

Grey is my all time fav neutral. Most people love black or brown or even white. But grey is sooo cool because it has soo many diff shades. Cool grey, warm grey, dark grey, light grey, solid grey, heather grey... its endless!

i love your blog! i'm a new reader, but i definitely think this outfit is perfectly *you* .. simply because you look so pretty & confident in it!

I love your style--it is YOUR style; although I'd be very interested in seeing your "take" on other bloggers' style too.
But you know what I'm really excited about???? Ummmmmmmmm, a little birdie told me you are actually really really really possibly coming to NYC for the Chictopia thing--is this true?????? (sorry I'm such a gossip)

Cool idea.
Sometimes I still feel like I'm finding my own style but put me in a pair of brown letaher boots and I'm ready for anything. Don't you hate it though when someone buys you somehting or finds something for you and says 'it's soo you' and you kinda hate it? Happens way too much...

favourite outfit ever.
er, well...you have a LOT of really wonderful outfits but i would say at least in the top 3 that's for sure!! i love doing that also. especially with cognac...wear cognac boots, a belt and maybe a bracelet or ring!

I love, love this outfit. 1, 2, 3 grays, 1, 2, 3 browns! Most people might think gray and brown would = boring outfit... but you did it in such a great way it's far from boring..! The brown really *pops*.

Thanks for sharing this. :)

i love this! i think it's cool to have a signature style. i look at the things that i wear, and it seems like they all have a similar thread going through. i tend to do variations on the same look. i love it. and i love your style and it inspires me daily.

Jen said...

Sounds awesome! I'd love to see who inspires you.

I'm sure I have a signature style too - what it is, I'm not quite sure. Definitely NOT jeans (any more)! :)

I love tan colours on grey. One thing I think you do so utterly effortlessly is over knee socks with bare legs and boots. As soon as it's warm enough for a hint of skin here, I'll be trying that out!

There's nothing better than stepping out in an outfit that is COMPLETELY you. It's great to stretch yourself, but for the most part, I want my clothes to be a reflection of who I am.

Love the stockings here.

I'm looking forward to seeing the other bloggers that you choose to highlight. Its always so interesting to find out about other people's personal style. Great outfit, as always. I love the colors you've used.

Yeah, these colors are definitely you! I love the simplicity of the color scheme in this outfit. Such a great, fun look!

I love this ensemble! And it is very me as well. I tend to stick to grays, navys, and browns.

On a completely non-fashion related point, do you mind if I ask you how you became an art therapist? I'm switching career paths and was considering art education. I could e-mail you if that's easier. Thanks:)

I definitely agree with what you said, the styles of other bloggers are so inspirational!

I love your observations. I don't even know what my own style would be. Let alone be able to point out all the things you just mentioned.

That said, I definitely find myself putting together outfits and thinking "I'm feeling very (blogger's name) in this outfit." It's fast becoming one of the things I like most about the blog world.

Love this outfit too! Chic and cozy!

I love the idea of outfit influences! I think the same thing all of the time about how other bloggers have influenced my style choices that particular day (most of the time it is unconsciously, and I don't even realize it until I am fully dressed)!

What is so funny is that before I even read your narrative to the photos, is that I thought to myself how much this looks perfectly like your personal style....seriously!!

piglet said...

Oh my gosh, if you could work out my personal style I would be so happy. I'm all over the place haha!

Love this look, it is very you!

I love this outift! I'm wishing it was warmer here already so I could do the bare legs/socks/boots combo. Still, you've inspired me to dig out some legwarmers and layer them up with tights. Thanks for the final pic, your hair looks great -so healthy and natural.

Maya said...

You always look good! Your sense of style is truly unerring. Thanks for a great blog.

Maya said...

Yes, I like the idea of referencing other people's style and explaining external influences on you. First, because I love it when bloggers point me in the direction of other sources of inspiration; second, because I like your style and am curious as to how it developed and continues to develop; and third, because I enjoy fashion analysis of almost any kind.

K said...

It's a gorgeous personal style and one that certainly works for you!

Mikhaila said...

I know exactly what you mean, sometimes I put on an outfit and I just know that it's me. I try to remember what it was about the outfit that made me feel that way when I'm having one of those days when you can't find anything to wear! I'm starting to really get a grasp on what works for me and what doesn't. But I still like to play around and try new things.

btw I love the whole outfit, especially the boots. I'm a sucker for a beautiful pair of boots, even more so if their vintage!

This outfit is lovely, and I think it's great that you're figuring out what makes you feel most "you". It can be such a hard thing to pinpoint sometimes, but once you figure it out, it makes getting dressed so much easier.

For me, I feel most myself when I have color and pattern and/or texture in my outfit. I have to force myself to wear all-neutral ensembles. I love mixing in bright and bold colors and patterns

I thought the Boss (I call ‘em that ‘cause he’s got the charge card, wheels, tells me when to get out of his chair, and mangles Springsteen in the shower) said he was takin’ me to the day spa yesterday. Turned out I went to the vet instead and had to wait all day in a cage to be seen by some cold-fingered, SOB stickin’ all sorts of things in me in various places. Sort of pissed me off at the Boss until he gave me a couple of licks of ice cream cone when he picked me up. All is forgiven.

Because I’m in a better mood today I thought I’d drop by and give you a bark out. I think your philosophy about looking away in your fotos to focus on the clothes is right on, but what’s with that poor chicklet standing next to you? Why should you have all the fun?

I mean the Boss sometimes tries to put a sweater on me, but I give ‘im this look like I’m gonna take his hand off and that usually ends it. Clothes just look stupid on a dog, even one as attractive as this eighteen-pound Brussels Griffon. I can’t imagine I have found a fellow First Skinner. What’s the chances?

It’s not like we’re nudists or anything. We’re good-looking without having to put a second skin on. My girl there is sportin’ a white felt skin with some fine, thin metallic leggings. She’s wrapped around this beanpole that just knocks your socks off (and hers). And check out those tasty feet – all four of ‘em. Just like me. (I think I’m in love.) She looks as good a freshly painted fire hydrant. You’re not bad yourself. Keep up the good work. And don’t put a sweater on my sweetheart.

Just the Chewster, callin’ it for the canines—and the Boss.

Wow, I love your style formula. I'll have to think one up for myself! Also, check out my blog for a special award to you. Annie.

ahh, this is familiar. my "me" colours are grey and rust too, amongst a few others like brown and ivory and tan. all these colours i just listed go together too - fact, you're wearing most of them in this outfit.

sounds like a good idea but i also have to say that i see quite a lot of uniformity these days, even as i don't blogwalk much to make this observation. i guess it's thanks to the internet and well yes bloggers ;)
