turn of events

A few things that happened Thursday:

  1. I contacted a vintage dealer who will come to my house and buy my vintage off of me regularly at 50 pieces a pop. (this is a big deal for me)
  2. I restocked the two retail spaces I am selling vintage out of. (and collected my moolah)
  3. I discounted the remaining inventory in my etsy shop to prepare it for selective weekly listings and my new listing schedule. (I have been slacking horribly in this department but I have a plan this time)
  4. I watched my son get his very first hair cut by someone who was not me at a salon. (my heart broke. This was the first time his personal aesthetic differed from mine, but instead of holding those reigns too tight, I let him have the haircut of his choice. ends up he has impeccable taste in hair cuts, and now looks like the most handsome boy I have ever seen. Though he was before the hair cut as well)
  5. Ran into a "loose end" at the grocery store and sorted it all out. (7 years ago I took a water painting class from a woman named Janice. I loved the class and took to it very well. Janice lent me her very favorite paint brush to use for the class. Due to certain variables, I stopped showing up to the class and accidentally kept her brush. I felt guilty about it. Ends up she still gave me a passing grade for the class and when it came time for me to graduate from university, that credit saved me from having to go a whole extra semester. I felt even more guilty about her brush. I saw her at the store tonight for the first time since my last day in her class and apologized for the brush, gave her $20, which she only accepted $10 of, and thanked her for the grace she showed me by passing me even though I dropped out AND stole her favorite brush. She was touched, but promised that she wasn't bothered. We talked for a long time and it ends up she runs a gallery and wants to see my work and show it if I get at it again. She always thought I did pretty well at it and would love to see me work again. wow.)
  6. Decided to start sculpting again.
  7. Took these pictures in between the store and my decision to make work again. (actually my husband took them since I was nearly out of sunshine time and was in a hurry to not to miss it.)
  8. Made Tilapia for the first time. (it was good)
  9. Realized that it was a very eventful day.
  10. Cracked open a bottle of wine.
The following photos are for my grandma, but you can take a gander too if you would like:
He loves it. LOVES it. He feels older and cooler. I love it too. It was just sort of a big deal to me for some reason. It was the first step he has taken, the first opinion he has had about how he would like to look and the visual identity he would like to have. Anyway, I am having a very strong MOM feeling right now. I know that is not really something I talk about here so if you are not interested in relating I will not take it personally. But thank you for giving my feelings an audience. Not sure why, but it feels nice to know that you are reading this. As it always does since that is why I continue to do this. So thank you. and thank you for your advice yesterday.

Get it, girl. Keep that feeling of anticipation and achievement going. I've personally been slumping lately and reading this today makes me feel better. There's always something we can do, right?

I want to come visit you guys sometime to see THAT LIGHT in person.

p.s. anything ever come of that philosophy discussion website? We emailed about it once. I'm still ready and willing. Let me know.

xoxo

he is a handsome boy!! i can totally see you in him. but i know exactly how you feel about having your son grow up and have his own opinions. for some reason, it's even more of a moment when you put it in writing and make it known outside of yourself. like, i wasn't super emotional about my kiddo starting kindergarten until i was writing about it on my blog. then i got all teary. for some reason just putting my feelings into words and letting others read them made it a really big deal.

OMG, he's too cute! I love the fact that HE wanted to change his hair. So funny how kids think sometimes, we need to give them more credit. I'm happy you shared these pics too.

I'm jealous at how productive you've been. That's alot of accomplishment in one day lady. Good luck with everything but it all seems to be working out for you.

oh he's such a little man! i have a 3 yr old, and the first time we cut his hair at a salon, he looked so grownup, but so much more vulnerable too, something about seeing his fuzzy neck and the shape of his head, you know?? love your blog, and your whole outfit! sounds like the universe had alot in store for you yesterday :)

Good for you and good for your little pumpkin taking the way he looks into his own hands, sorta speak, or maybe put more succinctly, out of your hands. Best of luck with all your endeavors, whether they be with your art or your shopping/selling. And I like your bangs better now. Nice pictures!

OMG could he get any cuter?? He actually looks alot like you, I am sure you hear that alot. You must be a very proud mommy, and rightly so!!

Also, so glad you worked things out with Janice. I am sure it's a relief and one less thing weighing you down emotionally.

I understand how you feel, mommy :)

I'm the same way with my boy. We've cut his hair since he...started growing hair :)

He got his first 'pro' haircut this January. He loved it. He was so happy getting his first haircut so I had to kind of accept that he's grown up and all...

But, this summer, b4 kindergarten started, he actually asked both me and his dad to cut his hair again :) And we did, yes, he's got a weird haircut now (mommy and daddy got rusty)--at least, he loves it as much as the pro cut!

P.S. I love the simplicity and boho-chic style you've been sporting. I wish I had the same sense of style. And it's awesome you dealt with a loose end, I was the same exact way as you. I had communication issues at times..your story made me want to deal with my loose ends too :)

So at first I thought those were your "first date" jeans, but then I saw that they are from AE and now I am thinking that they are most likely "birthday haul" jeans, no? Either way, they fit you like a flipping dream, and I love the bell bottom insert! Yow!

Also, I got really excited when I saw the 2nd picture of your son, because I was like: That's my hair!!!!! But he totally does not have my hair :)

He looks so handsome, and I love that you shared your maternal moment of realizing he is forming his identity. I pretty much can't relate in the ways of having a similar experience, but I did get tears in my eyes thinking about it. My period is also coming, so I get tears in my eyes about a lot of stuff right now (my dad's girlfriend started blogging again and I found a post about her grandmother yesterday that almost had me curled on the floor in a puddle of my own tears). I don't want that to sound like I am discounting this experience, because I really am very touched.

Do you think that somehow this loose-end tying up was a piece of yesterday's thoughts coming to fruition? Even though it's obviously not the same person, but I think it's really interesting that the world kind of forced you into that situation after you were wondering about forcing yourself into a similar one...? Hm. Hmmm. Hmmmmmm.

Such a cutie! Love the spikes. I have a 4 yr old boy with fantastic red waves. We had a persistent lice issue at school and I finally relented in having his head shaved like some of his other buddies. I cried and he rejoiced. He looked like a mini-marine. I can handle the hair but god forbid he becomes a republican!

Congrats on an awesome day! And a belated happy birthday as well. I'm 10 years older than you, which seems weird, because I don't feel that way. Guess that's a good thing!

Well it sounds like everything is heading in a positive direction for you...which is very exciting!!
Your little boy is soooo handsome...it's nice to see tid-bits of your family life on the blog every now and then!...plus I totally get the "proud mama moments"...and I love to see them on blogs, and I'm rather guilty of posting my own quite frequently!

Thats quite the day you had! It sounds lovely. Your son looks so handsome. It is a big deal to start taking time in your appearance. What a great milestone to share with him.

What a little dude. He looks so satisfied in that last picture...like it turned out just the way he wanted. He looks like you...thanks for sharing!

Wow, that IS a busy day. But at least everything was positive!

Your son is such a little stud. My daughter is 3 and we have yet to cut her hair. Ever. I'm terrified of it.

Cute boy with a cute haircut!!

Where is your fabulous purse from? Vintage, I presume. I'm surprised at how much I love those AE jeans. They look comfy & worn-in.

MARGARET said...

first of all congratulations! i think you have an amazing eye for vintage clothing and it's about time some vintage buyers realized that too. can't wait for your etsy updates. :)

i also hate to echo the sentiment that your little lad is so cool--but so cute.

um, i totally meant 'have' not 'hate.' ;-)

Comparing the 3rd photo and the last photo makes me feel like I'm in a time warp. He looks so much older and he's right about the coolness level.

After reading your activity list I felt like a complete slacker. We'll see if that gets me to be active over the weekend or if lying on a blanket in the park wins out like it usually does.

I'm actually glad you had your mom moment on your blog. Thanks for sharing. :)

will you let him style it himself? Entire bottles/tubes of gel at a time??

GS said...

Oh my gosh, such a little man now! He's gonna be a heartbreaker. Although I can't relate as I'm not a mom yet, I can really appreciate your depiction and how sweet it was. I love how you reflect on such simple, little moments that many brush past. Those are the best ones though I think.
