go around

When I was a teenager I observed that many of the trends I loved, my mom recalled she wore when she was my age. Knowing that, and regretting that my mom didn't save her dittos and whatnot, I decided to put away specific specimens from my wardrobe as they moved out of popularity, theorizing that one day they would come back around and I would be the coolest Mom/ Grandma/ Auntie some little girl could ever have since I had the foresight to save these things for her.  Little did I know that I would have another go round with them.  These were my first date Levis.  I wore them on several first dates, usually with a striped cropped shirt (and my belly button ring poking out. No I don't have it anymore, took it out when I was 20. yup, there is still a hole.) I grew out of them while I gained my freshman 15 and had not given them a second thought till now.

I am sure you can imagine my surprise when I pulled them on and realized they were the exact thing I have been looking for at the thrift shops.  Call it a early life crisis if you want, but I am totally wearing my teenaged pants.  It just seems odd to me that during the 90s we recycled the 70s (my moms era) a 20 year difference, but here in 2010 we are recycling the late 90's?  I wore these just 12 years ago.  I guess technically it would be a recycling of the 70s with a hybrid 90s/ 2010 update since I am absolutely not rocking my belly shirt and ring with my clunky thick soled boots (though probably some teenager is, somewhere right now.) Maybe I am deluding myself into thinking that these do not look absolutely ridiculous on me, but whatever.  I am digging it.

Now that I found my stash, I think I might take a closer look at some of my other specimens. Heavy tiger fur pants? Thick, plaid, flannel shirt, given to me by my Japanese foreign exchange student's younger brother? What else is in there?  Maybe I was just being clairvoyant for my own personal gain after all.

Pants: Vintage? Levis (surely not vintage. Right?)
Tee: thrifted then cut
Shoes, hat: thrifted
Purse: gift from Victorina

These are the most perfectly retro jeans. I have to wonder if "vintage" declaration has been set to hyper speed along with our instant gratification social media soaked lives? I don't know... what I do know is that you look fantastic and I am infinitely jealous of your foresight! Rock those Levis.

I go by the rule that if it's 20 years or older, its vintage. Otherwise they are just an item of clothing waiting for its "go around". I think you look great in those jeans by the way! Good for you that you can still fit in your teenage jeans. That will never happen for me...sigh...

These don't look ridiculous, they look fantastic! I do think it's very odd that the late 90's are already back in fashion again, it really doesn't feel like it's been long enough!! I went to a 90's themed birthday party last night though, and the clothes were either 1) hideous or 2) the pieces were something i'd actually consider. It's definatly interesting though

I still have a pair of cutoffs that I kept from when I was 14, I'm only 20...but they are definitely back in style and I feel cool knowing I can still wear them...
even though they've been severely patched up! :)

Thanks for sharing this story about your jeans, and I'm so glad you kept them. There's a lot from my late childhood and teenage years that I wish I kept. Like this white lace vest that I wore all the time from ages 10-12. It was so hippie, which is why I got rid of it during my tomboy years. Sighhh.

i had the abercrombie & fitch version of those jeans in the late 90s. but of course since they were poorly made, they completely feel apart before i was even done wearing them back then. definitely shows that buying quality the first time is so much better. you had best keep those jeans. you look awesome in them!

Hahaha~ I love that you saved your clothes for YOURSELF (even though I know you didn't mean to). That worked out well. So do your bangs. :)

90's revival I love it! Well, maybe not all of it, I'm glad I cleansed my closet of the 'Spice Girl' platform like runners (I'm sort of dry heaving thinking of that) and my collection of 48 3/4length baby tees in every colour of the rainbow. I love this shirt and I was super surprised when you wrote it was thrifted. I thought it was AA immediately. nice one!

Very amusing post. The jeans look great on you.

I think I have a Nehru jacket somewhere in the back of my closet from 1967...

I wish I had saved some stuff rather than giving them away for the very same reason. I had really cool polka dotted tops and dress and some pants with just the right amount of flare that I am missing a lot right now. I love the casual outfit that you are wearing in this post. You are looking very cool.

Well if the pants fit...
I think they look great, and I love your plans to be the coolest Mom/Grandma/Auntie - I think it would be awesome to have clothes that my grandma wore when she was my age (even though most would probably be way too small!)

You look amazing as always, but what I especially love about this outfit is the bag.

These Date Night Jeans are so epic it can't even be expressed in words.

The wash on the denim in the perfect time machine into wonderfully soft, 90s land.

And the color combo of it all together is just amazing.

I really, really, really, really like this.

And all of that hay.

That is so funny! I seriously just pulled out a high school pair of "high waist" boot cut gray pants from Express and wore them today :) Hello 1995, I'm back!

Love your blog <3
