slip sliding

I am a firm believer in the slippery slope. You have a rule or a goal or a strong routine, or and ethical, moral mindset toward something, but due to varying circumstances you let something slide this once.  You justify it, accept it, no harm done.  Vow that that will be the only time and that you are sticking strong to your principals the next time.  Then, for some reason the next time comes and you think back on how easy it was to break your code the first time and that there were no serious repercussions so just one more time really won't hurt right?  Naw. . .  so, you bend the rules again. FOR THE LAST TIME you tell yourself.  And it's a little exhilarating.  This time you question why that pesky rule exists in the first place.  Better to question the rule than question your own character and judgment, because, I mean Jeeze, you are a good person and its not like its hurting anyone. Third time comes around and this time its BALLS OUT madness!  You break the rules with fire on your wings!  Double break it in the same go round to really pound in the fact that you have just completely fallen down and off of your high horse and there is no going back!  You don't even want to go back since it would mean stopping this wonderful thing that you are now so accustomed to and have no intention of quitting!!  Yeah!

What in the hell am I talking about?  What has sent me free sailing down the slope to my lowly existence?  I will tell you.  Just not right now.

Awe!! I'm just effing with ya!  I used to have this rule that I would only buy two pairs of NEW shoes per year, one pair of sandals in the spring and one pair of boots in the fall, all the others must be second hand, but I broke my rule by buying my Seychelles teal shoes (justified, they are awesome) and then again when I bought my Toms (in my head I think I was thinking 'well, another person gets a pair so it cancels out?') and then, the great tumble and fall was Saturday in San Francisco. I got the pair above (on clearance at Urban for $29!! COME ON!!)  and another pair of "vintagey looking" t straps (I am in my brother's wedding this weekend and needed black heels!! Look I am still justifying myself!  I am pathetic!) Sorry if you were hoping it would be something more delicious than shoes.  I am starting to think there is nothing more delicious than SHOES.  Crap.  I have to get a hold of myself.

I don't think shoes ever need a justification. Well, maybe that's just me justifying, but still! Love those, I have a similar pair and think they're perfect this summer - easy to wear and stylish.

That was brilliant!...trust me shoes can always be justified!!!
I love those shorts!!...I'm thinking I'm going to need to put those into my inspiration folder as well!(I just finished making a romper inspired by one you wore....)

Shoes are the slipperiest of slopes for me. And I hate to enable, but those UO sandals are darling. Maybe think of them as a souvenir?

Great. When can I go thrifting with you? What about borrowing...? I'm an 8, anything you see on the site you can borrow. Does that help satiate your shoe fetish?

I always say that I won't buy something in order to save money but, I never follow it. Haha. Luckily, my husband is fairly understanding and most of what I buy are things that are either very well priced or are amazing pieces. I always try to get people to swap on these sites because then it is sort of like you are getting something new but you arent spending the money. I have some of my best finds from swaps with bloggers!

There's nothing wrong with a little indulgence once in awhile. Maybe just make up for it in another area of your closet?

Oh how can I disagree with you? For some time like 2 years, I didn't eat French fries and nothing really too oily... And my skin was nearly perfect, I had no weight problem... Then one day a friend of mine bought some fires for me at lunch... Well, I had to eat it... I was really, truly happy with the fridge baked potatoes, till then... Anyways, you look wonderful, no exception! The shorts are just perfect and well, we have to except that those shoes look really, seriously comfortable...

you're telling it like it is, three strikes and you're out, the first slip is crucial though. but you really shouldn't be so hard on yourself. two pairs of new shoes A YEAR? that's freaking strict!

Ha ha ha. When I started reading this post, I had already formulated a response in my head. Something like "take care darling, hugs, everything will be alright, its okay to slide once in a while, we are human after all." It still applies. But I am all smiles now, no frowns. Love the whole outfit. :)

Well, I have to say, I have broken my shopping rules already myself!!! This is a great post. Loved it. While I read it I thought about how I've been a slacker blogger lately.

Really I should be on a slippery shoe slope instead. Because you look fine. Love the shoes. Love this look. Love the photos. You are lovely! (and thankfully not addicted to crack cocaine like I worried for a twentieth of a second!)

You can never have enough shoes. You really can't. And I LOVE these sandals, I'm so jealous!! What a steal!

Shoes are definitely my weakness. I can't leave the house without coming home with a new pair. Your 2-pair-per-year rule would most likely kill me.

Don't beat yourself up too much, it's hard to stick to the rules when there are great shoes involved! Quite frankly, I'm impressed that you adhered to your rule up until now. And, as for this outfit, I'm loving the loose blousy shorts. I've never felt comfortable in daisy duke style cut-offs, and I've always gravitated to shorts more like these. I've been thrilled to be seeing more styles like this in stores. I'll have to check out AA!

{Disclaimer: this is an enabler post}

So, seriously man. If you feel bad about this then we should be hanging out. Stat.

Here's my theory- I have probably in all honesty spent well into the thousands on Vintage and/or Thrifted shoes. The VAST majority of which (I swear to god) manage to change size by the time they're home. Or break my ankles. Or give me horrrrrrendous blisters. Or leave bits of what I can only assume is paint on my feet. Or squeeze my toes until they're numb. Or puncture hardwood floors. Or kill my knees because some vintage pumps are made of popsicle sticks (I'm finding research to back this up). And then they get tossed, buried in the closet, given away, or sent straight to hell. Obviously if I give them away or donate them, I'm recyclingblahblahblah.

So instead of constantly searching for the best pair of vintage spectators, not finding them, and settling on two pairs: one of which too small, the other too big... I've decided that I can buy myself some new damn shoes and have happy feet! Because my feet are still in recovery of the days of forcing them in ill-fitting shoes. I mean, I was having to buy (thrift) a "new" pair of shoes almost daily. And I figure splurging several times a year saves money in the long run... riiiight?

God damn it. I haven't even gotten to your outfit or your comment from earlier. AIE!!!

Long story short (I'm running late, but there's so much more!): I missed you too. Like a lot.

And I am honored to have been in your dream. Seriously.

I fully support your lack of self-control. Every girl has a right to shoes. That is all.

You perfectly describe that feeling, the exhilaration that comes with it... though I experience it with clothes AND dessert! Love this look, perfect for a hot summer day. And I just bought those UO clogs, too! (worn here: http://ordinarilyurbane.com/2010/06/15/dressed-for-house-hunting/) Aren't they ridiculously comfy? xo

I am right there with you. Sept for me the slope wasn't quantity, it was price. I used to think a $50 shoe was expensive, but now it isn't until the shoe is about $175 or above that I start thinking it may be too much... sigh...

That kind of happens to me but it seems to balance out. I tend to wait and see what I really want and end up buying it all at once and then I don't get anything for ages.
