Voodoo, Magic and Special K

Last night we got take out Chinese food and my husband's fortune cookie fortune read "You may lose the small ones, but you win the big ones."  True, true.  Then mine said "Someone thinks you are wonderfully mysterious."  I laughed and told him, "Well I know it must be someone else because you don't find me mysterious, at least not in a wonderful way!"  He smiled and agreed.  Dangit.  The mystery is gone.   I listened to a radio show about these fortunes on NPR one time, and they are big business!  It takes a lot of energy and creativity to come up with something vague and neutral and uplifting or encouraging.  Any great fortune cookie fortunes you can think of or remember?

Silly human generated fortunes aside, has anyone every looked into astrology or anything like that?  I mean what are your thoughts on that kind of thing?  I had my charts done one time and I have to admit, it was pretty interesting, but I am not sure if I was just interested in someone telling me things about (supposedly) me, giving me attention, telling me that I am unique and special because of this, this, and this, or if there was really some substantial evidence or trace of truth in it all.  Yes, I do behave the way a girl born on the virgo libra cusp would behave, and yes I do like to think of myself as creative and interested in aesthetics and beautiful things, but who isn't??  I think I placed astrology and numerology right in to the same pile as magic, voodoo, superstition and Special K cereal.  If you really really believe in it and think it will work, you will be able to find loads of evidence proving you are right.  If you don't, you never will.  Hmm.  How many other things are like this?

When I was a kid I got a fortune that said "Never trouble trouble til trouble troubles you" and it has gone down in history with my family, haha. To this day we still talk about it. Years ago I didn't even understand what it meant but now that I'm older I can see it was actually a pretty good fortune.

I have recently had two really interesting fortunes in cookies...

You will be unfortunately happy in wedlock.

and

It could be better but it is good enough.

Those two fortunes made me laugh!

Well, except that "evidence" for things that aren't true isn't evidence at all.

There is no way that stars and planets can somehow influence individuals here. Astrology is a primitive attempt at making sense of the universe and our place in it, but it's just as untrue as magic, superstition, and religion.

There's so much cool stuff to know that IS true and has real evidence to back it up that I don't see a reason to waste energy on stuff that's not. Some people have a childish need to believe in magical thought, but that doesn't make it real.

My favorite fortune ever:
Consume less. Share more. Enjoy life.

Tacked to my bulletin board to this day.

3 favorite fortunes I've ever received:

"You will get some new clothes" (seriously!)
and
"Love is being able to disagree and still hold hands"

Love your blog!

I love fortune cookies!! The best one I ever got said something along the lines of "You will be healthy if you eat more Chinese food". I cracked up!

My very favorite fortune I've ever received is...

"Absense sharpens love, presence strengthens it."

I've saved the little piece of paper and keep it in my planner.

I definitely loved astrology a lot more in my teen years, but I do think there is something to it. I hate to admit it, but I'm a total cancer: homebody, creative, hard to figure out unless I'm comfortable, and moody. Haha.

I had one a few years ago that read "When people tell you that you have a great personality, they're really thinking , "damn! your so ugly!"

That cracked me up so much that i kept it and still have it in my drawer at work :-)

I'm actually really into astrology - I'm a Sagittarius and if I read any horoscope describing what they are like it fits me to a tee! Also, i was born pretty much in the middle of my sign's date range and I had my chart done once too and most of the planets were in Sag when I was born, so I think that makes me more Sag than others. If you were born more towards one or the other end of the date range, it changes your personality. I just find it really interesting, same goes for psychics and stuff (I go to one every once in a while that lives close to me and she's AMAZING). That being said, i would never live my life by a star chart or by what a psychic tells me (some of it's kinda hokey) but it's just fun to think about and explore!

Whenever we had chinese food in high school, the fortunes would always say stuff like "get plenty of rest", "a balanced diet is essential to excelling in school", and "study hard"

I love your dress and your hair looks cute like that! :)

I only read the astrology section in the back of Seventeen when it comes every month (yeah, i still read it) and it usually has something about a cute boy or how I will find the perfect dress for prom...lol I guess I should read mine somewhere else :)

I've never been a firm believer in anything remotely supernatural or psychic. However, my friend recently had a reading and it was so unbelievably spot on, it shook my whole belief system! Spooky stuff.

I don't think I'll ever believe in Special K. Nothing can convince me of its value! :)

I love that you put Special K in the same category as voodoo and magic!
I had Chinese today and my fella and I argued over who had the best fortune - mine was "You will get everything you need in life" his was "You'll have a lifetime of happiness". In the end we agreed it was a tie.

One time I got a fortune that said "You will be hungry again in one hour."

Srsly, no lie. And it was right - I finished my leftovers that night without shame because, hey, the fortune cookie predicted it.

I believe in astrology whenever it tells me what I want to hear.

Haha. Great post. I agree that astrology just tells you general things about life that are going to happen to anyone, but it's fun to get swept away from time to time.

And I love love LOVE how you put Special K cereal in with magic and voodoo. Made me giggle. Hehe.

You look so lovely here! Adore the hat. You are just magic with hats! They look good on me; but I always end up taking them off anyway! I'm like a one year old that way, I guess.

Oh, and as for astrology. I don't think so. It is just too limiting! I mean, what you just described totally describes me, and I'm a Cancer! So!

As for my best fortune, I put it on the fridge: "You will be blessed with long life family and friends". :-)

I try to keep an open mind about things like astrology etc. I don't believe in it - but if I was all knowing, I would probably I would probably be laying in my gold bath tub right now in my mansion, on my private island :-)

I don't believe in astrology, however I do completely match up with my Gemini traits of being an over communicator who is curious in all things and values intellect

Although I don't give much weight to fortunes, my favorite one ever was actually received by my boyfriend- "Handsome is as handsome does". Suffice it to say- Priceless!

You should check out a book titled "The Secret Language of Birthdays", it describes your personality based on the day you were born. Mine fit me perfectly!

This look is a true classic and you wear it soooo well.

I know what a true scorpio should be like and surprisingly I am exactly like that, to the dot. I do not know if it is coincidence or self affirmation, but it just happens to me.

Best fortune I ever got: "If you are still hungry, have another fortune cookie."

The second best: "Everyone agrees, you are the best."

The second one I was actually sent in the mail by a friend, and then happened to get the same fortune 3 days later.

I'm not super into astrology or anything, but I read my horoscope the day before my wedding, and it said, "Spend time at home preparing for a big social event"! Pretty crazy how sometimes it seems to fit perfectly with what's going on in your life.

I can believe that there is a biological reason behind astrology: the pull of the moon, temperature and diet can all affect a developing fetus - so it would only make sence that those conceived in winter may share different traits than those conceived in summer; the environmental influences are different. So I can buy into the personality traits to some extent - but not the "today the planets align for you" horoscopes.
