Toms

Very happy to be wearing my very first pair of Toms shoes today!  I have been wanting a pair for a long time and I finally just bought some.  I knew so many good things about the company and about all the shoes they have been donating (when you buy a pair of Toms, they donate a pair of shoes to a child in need) So I did not expect to feel anything other than a slight warmth and selfish excitement about getting new shoes.  The crazy thing is that when I finished my purchase and it told me on the screen that I had just donated a pair of shoes to a child in need, I totally teared up.  I did not expect to feel emotional about it at all.  BUT I DID.  It made me realize that if doing something that simple, that far removed from the good that is being done (a country or two away, for someone I will never meet, and only knowing about it via electronic notification) can bring tears to my eyes, maybe I am not being as giving and good to my fellow neighbor in my direct community as I could be.  Its just so weird to me that I can completely get behind buying something for myself to give to someone else I don't know, and not just DOING something simple like volunteering locally for people I actually live among.  I guess perhaps its a little bit because I value my time more than my money. So, its easy altruism to just throw some money in a direction, plus I get something cool out of it.  Hmm.

Well, anyway, the reason I am excited about wearing my Toms is not only because I like my shoes and some little kid is going to get a pair too, it is also because they remind me of how good it feels to do a little tiny bit of good, and make me realize that I am Capable of doing so, SO much more.

I've been dying for a pair of Toms for ages, I just can't bring myself to order them online without trying them on first. I haven't been able to find a supplier in Canada either, so it looks like I'm out of luck until the next time I head down to my neighbours to the south!

it is a pretty great company that will do something like what toms shoes does. we are so fortunate to be able to buy shoes whenever we need them and i love that they will donate to those who do not have the means. now you're making me want to buy a pair! i love your dress, you look so gorgeous in blue! and your new camera makes your photos look even better and you even prettier :)

That is a very cute dress!

This was an interesting post to read. I also find it a lot easier to donate money than it is to donate my time. I'm not sure why that is. I'll have to ponder that a bit more.

That dress is AWESOME. You look SO beautiful in the second photo!

Oh, and I know what you mean about time being valuable! Something about having a child,I think. There just seems like so much less time than before! But, you know what, there is nothing wrong with giving money! We all give what we have and what we can, right? It's the love behind it (or teary eyes...;-)

Hello there! I found your blog a few weeks ago and I totally love reading it! I also have the same dress which I just received last week. I thought it looks super cute on you! Love the story about Toms. It's nice to know that there are companies our there that not only care about their business but give back to the communities =)

Hi Lovely! What a great experience to feel the love that comes from simple acts of kindness!!! I started a blog called "fashion church" and thought of you when starting it. It is based on creative sharing. I hope you will contribute, or show me a better way to allow folks to add their creativity :) You are a very inspiring soul, and I believe you aren't "new" to this world!(Friends Episode)Thanks for your inspiration. I am planning to go on Etsy and release myself from a lot of vintage clothing, etc. I just found 12 pr. of vintage 80's levi's cut-offs from back in the days of greenpeace! Yipee! Some even have old peace signs on the butt :)

Aren't TOMS the most comfortable shoes you've ever worn?
I participated in the TOMS One Day Without Shoes in the beginning of April. Definitely made me realize how important a pair of shoes are. It's a great organization for a great cause.

I always feel a little odd when doing something for myself benefits another. I mean it's great and all, but seems a little... less endearing when I know I'll be getting something out of it, haha. But at least it's making some sort of difference.

Cute shoes!

You look amazing in that dress!

I completely agree with you about the lack of effort I often put into helping those in my community and instead reaching outward. I think it's better to think about the good you have done and not focus on the good you should be doing. Every little bit counts and when/if you have the time you can donate more!

Thanks for bringing awareness to this issue, its an easy way for all of us to help and get cute shoes. Talk about a win win situation.
