Season of mist

Is everyone familiar with that phrase "People are in your life for a reason, a season, or a life time"?  I have no Idea who said it originally, but its the freaking truth.  The person who gave me these boots and this dress, blew into my life in September of 2008 stronger than the fall gusts that knock trees down around here during that season.  She literally moved into my house, and she stayed there .  .  .  during the coldest, darkest time of my life.  By February 2009, it was time for her to leave, and her exit felt like the worst earthquake I had ever experienced.  Yelling and throwing things and crying and bags stuffed with god knows what and thrown onto front lawns and crazy messes that I won't even go into.  Just as powerfully as she entered, she left.  I have no Idea where she is now.  She is not on my list of letter recipients.  It almost feels like that season of time she was with me didn't even exist.  She left proof though.  In the form of the best vintage clothing, shoes and styling tips I have ever encountered.  I don't wear this dress much because it somehow feels infused with memories, as if she put a spell on her gifts so that I could never forget her.  I was even thinking of selling it, but I can never do that.  I sort of don't want to forget.

Sometimes the very best looks come from clothing that holds profound meaning for its wearer. Good meaning, and bad meaning.

I think this is my absolute favourite outfit of yours. Not only because you look great in it, but because it so clearly means something to you.

Please don't stop wearing it. :)

Oh my god, this is probably one of the best outdoor photoshoots I've ever seen. The colors, the setting, the styling, everything is just right. Its funny how someone can have such a huge effect on your life, then suddenly vanish. I have many of those actually. I wouldn't even know where to begin if I were to write to them.

It's funny how people leave an impression in our lives - whether they be good or bad. Sometimes we hold on to the bad because it made an impact and don't ever want to let go, while the good is just that...it's good, but sometimes doesn't make a change in our lives.

Everything about this photo shoot is beautiful - and the story makes it three dimensional. People leave their mark in odd ways. I'd take lovely dresses over some of the broken things I've had to clean up.

i think about that a lot, actually, especially now that i'm in college. i think about all of the really close friends that i knew for years and years but have lost touch with recently. it's so sad, but i guess not everyone is supposed to stay in our lives forever.

these pictures are gorgeous. the styling and location go perfectly together!

Wow. This is a great post... it sounds so strange that someone can blow through your life so seemingly quickly like a whirlwind of whatever they are...

That entire outfit is really lovely, and the pictures are taken in the perfect setting. :) You look great.

This is probably my favorite outfit I've seen you wear -- you look ethereal and your photos are beautiful.
Some people come into our lives for a short while, but how we learn from it is the key part. I hope you keep wearing this outfit -- even if it reminds you of bittersweet times, you can still make new happy memories while wearing it :) - JoAnn, Sidewalk Chalk

I've never heard that phrase before, but it's so relatable. I think we all experience relationships like that at some point.

Lovely photos. You look so pretty. Love those boots!

These photos are gorgeous, and you look radiant in them.

I've been meaning to thank you, by the way, for all your honesty and openness in your posts. I think sometimes, as style bloggers, we tend to focus simply on where we bought something, or what we like about a particular garment. That's not a bad thing, but it's nice that you let us into a different part of your world.

Great post... and I totally understand what you mean by someone blowing into your life with such force and leaving in the same way...there for just a season. I absolutely love every photo and what you are wearing.

I've had friends like that. But I am also a believer that they touch our lives for a reason. My "friends" left me with better taste in music and better insight in general. So there's that.

These pictures are just lovely. You found the perfect colors in your setting to compliment the outfit and the result is fabulous. Well done!

And that an intriguing story behind these items. I always find that I'm drawn to things with a history (good or bad) and those are the things I want to wear over and over. S.

Wow, this location is amazing! I absolutely love these pictures. Your outfit is so beautiful and sweet. I'm sorry to hear it doesn't have all the best memories attached though.

I think this is my favorite set of pictures you've posted.. the outfit perfect matches the background and everything is just gorgeous!

Isn't it funny how people tend to do that? Reminds me of several friends I've had, but minus the whole living together thing. Especially because you seem like me, where you open your heart so easily to people so they know how to hurt you the most..

I just found your blog the other day, and it's really amazing. Thanks for sharing so openly with everyone who stops by!
I linked your blog in my very first blog post in a new blog that my twin sister and I share. It's still a green sapling, but I'm excited to watch it grow! Cheers!

I love the photos of your in the chair outdoors. So beautiful.

Your comments about this woman, so poignant, remind me of the book The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood. Ever read it? Annie.

Every outfit I've seen on this blog is amazing. You are naturally stylish.

Love the new poses! I remember your inquiry as to everyone's opinions on your signature pose - I actually commented on that post to say I'd like to see some new stuff. And these are excellent. You really picked the perfect setting for that outfit, too - you must have an eye for the artistic.

Oh - I just read the passage that accompanies this post (I was so excited by the pictures that I commented on those before looking at anything else). Thank you for sharing this - as a reader, it means a lot to me that you are willing to share the very personal history behind your clothing and style. I have a new appreciation for this post in particular, and for you and your blog.
