before blogging and sleeping braids

Before I started blogging, this was my formula: comfortable tee, boot cut worn in jeans, and my trusty cowboy boots.  Simple, practical, comfortable, classic, a little monotonous day to day, but perfectly fine.  My husband LOVES it when I dress this way now because it feels like such a novelty for me to look so low maintenance.   I am wearing this jacket today to comfort and remind myself that I did keep one for myself.  I chose my Favorite Suede and fur collar jacket and my Favorite trench.  I have more cropped jackets I will list, but I would like to get yesterday's up in the shop before I go into the cropped jacket collection.  I had an inquiry as to where I found all of these coats and where to get more, and the answer, unfailingly is THRIFT STORES.  I purchased every single one of them for $25 (my limit) or less ($9 - $12) at thrift stores in my town.  And there are probably over 50 that I have passed up just based on the principal that my hoarding tendencies disgust me.  It is actually pretty therapeutic for me to let these go and makes me feel like I was just collecting them for people who can't find them on their own in their over picked towns.

Now to the subject of sleeping braids.  I wish I could tell you that they were some really cool thing, but really, a few times last week I put my hair in pigtail braids before going to bed because when I don't (every night practically) I wake up with HUGE dreadlocked mattes in my hair. Like a poor little pound puppy.  It rips and breaks my hair when I brush them out in the morning and interrupts my sleep since it feels like I am laying on a dense patch of dead animal or something.  So, I have been trying to be disciplined enough to braid my hair each night to protect it from harm.  Thats all.  I have been toying with the idea of doing a video of me cutting my own hair though.  I am not sure how to load a movie into my blog so if you can tell me how to do it I will give it a try.  I have been cutting my own hair for a few years now and my technique is very easy, I think If you saw you would be able to do it yourself too.  If you have wavy hair that is.  And if you even want the same hair style as me, which you may absolutely not want.  But maybe I will just for fun.  My hair is still mostly wet in these pictures so excuse the fact that it looks a little flat.

COMMENT OF THE DAY:

I'm one of the quiet numbers on your counter, but I wanted to chime in today because I have hair just like yours and I sleep on a satin pillow case. I can take a shower at night and style my hair and in the morning it will look like I just styled it. You can get them at any bed, bath and beyond type store.

Before blogging, I had a similar uniform of jeans, a tee and flip flops.

I love that coat!

You look so comfy and laid back. It is amazing to me how you can looks just as much at easy in a flouncy dress as you can in jeans. You radiate confidence, truly.

You do look super cozy! Thank you for sharing this! You cut your own hair? That's awesome, and I'm a little jealous. I am just so fearful of royally screwing up my bangs or my hair (my hair is so fine it shows every single cut) that I just run to my stylist when I need a trim.

Oh, and I laughed out loud at the sleeping on a dead animal!

forget the sleeping braids! i wake up with a head of dreadlocks every day and i love it!
i wish i could cut my bangs straight though...

This is my uniform before and after blogging! haha--I just keep to the tried and true. I like to think my personality will outshine my wardrobe :) uh yeah right.
And btw--I love your Tryhard chictopia post-so perfect for the matter at hand. Goodluck with that because I know I'd be super happy if you won rather than some of the others. But you're one of my faves, what can I say??

Uploading videos is pretty easy - at least it has been for me. The video button when you post lets you choose the format and then uploads it. I've seen people use vimeo too.

yeah, i actually do have dreadlocks. but, as i'm sure you know, dark colors are difficult to photograph. so, my poor black locks go unnoticed. i will post some good detail pics on y blog just for you! <3

And somehow, you still look amazingly glam in your laid-back uniform!

Casual and still looking fabulous! This is a really great look for you. I'm glad you kept one of your coats too! They are all so amazing. You make me want to go look for some. I do love your hair too - they are great waves. Mine is more curly than wavy and all frizzy. Maybe I will try some braids but it may not be long enough.

Thanks so much for being so very honest! I am one of those people who have only read your blog but have never commented. I have found your blog to be a great encouragement and I just wanted to say, Thank you.

p.s. I think a hair cutting tutorial is greatly needed! I find it quite thrilling to be brave enough to cut one's own hair!

wow, you even make dressing down look awesome! i've always wanted a pair of cowboy boots. i don't know why, but i just think they are so cute!

Really cute casual look! Even if it jeans and t-shirt, the way you wear them (cut and fit of the clothes) make all the difference; you still look so stylish! :)

I love this outfit but I'm a HUGE fan of jeans. I don't know what it is but I feel like a woman you can wear jeans well can wear anything!

haha my boy is the same way he says he misses the jeans and t-shirt looks I used to wear, I find it really hard to dress down now, like I forgot to put on pants or something, boys they are too silly.

I'd love to see a video of you cutting your hair!

You look amazing in anything! Seriously even just jeans and a t-shirt! Your hair is super cute and wavy, I might even try sleeping with braids just to get the wavy effect!

I think outfits like this represent a person with a true sense of style. It's so simple, so perfect. No fuss, no muss. Just gorgeous! I've NEVER been able to pull this look off. It says a lot about your fashion kudos! :)

Would love to know how you cut your own hair... I've always wanted to but aren't brave enough!

I love the laid back look too, it's really cute!
About embedding your video onto your blog, I think the easiest way would be to post it to youtube and then there would be a side bar on your youtube video with the link code & the embedding code
Hope that helps!
A new haircut is always exciting :)

That's totally me...comfy T, jeans, tennis or boots...I love casual. I'm trying to expand my taste more, but it's difficult, especially when you're set in your way. You look awesome as always.

Oh and on your braids...my daughter has naturally curly hair and she has to braid her hair everynight otherwise, she too will wake up with dreads...it's so funny!

Christen said...

I'm totally going to try the braids tonight. But I honestly don't think it's going to look as great as yours does! And I think you can upload free videos on Flickr up to 2 per month but I've never done it before. Hope you get it figured out because I'd love to see the video!

I love how bloggings inspires people to be creative and reinvent their outfits....but there are still days where a jeans and t-shirt is just right. I just don't go out in public on those days.

I LOVE those jeans...perfectly distressed.

Lexie said...

i still dress this way about 3 days a week! my boyfriend definitely prefers the simpler, more relaxed style, but i know he appreciates when i dress up, too!

I cut my own hair as well but mainly just the fringe. I would love to see how to cut my whole head! I think you should do the video. I would watch for sure. I was planning on doing a how-to for cutting fringe but only with pictures, no video. I am not that techie on my little lap top!

What you say about buying stuff for other people who don't have access to the real goodness of thrifting in their own picked over cities totally hits home with me. I feel so guilty for hoarding but sometimes I buy it because I know I have enough but it's too good to leave. I feel even guiltier leaving it because I know people would love the thrifting availabilities I have. Ack!

What a coat to keep -- it's gorgeous! You still look really put together in jeans.

Before blogging, I would just wear jeans and a tee on the weekends. I wish I had more pics of myself from a year ago to compare to now, because the change in style is pretty striking.

I definitely had the same pre-blogging uniform, and Joe also LOVES it when I dress like that. Like it's a novelty or something. I guess that's the sign of true love, eh? Anyway, you look comfy, happy, and fresh, and I love it!

The comment about your husband is so funny! I have always had a similar personal style, but it is manifested itself differently. For the last few years that has meant anything fancy and vintage. My husband just LOVES when I wear jeans and a tee now! He has called my dresses and skirts "fancy costumes" for as long as I can remember!

You know? Before I started reading I thought that you look really well in this low maintenance look. Really. Jeans work really good with your body and you look comfortable and stylish. I used to dress more like this before blogging too. ;)

I find that this is a very classy, yet casual outfit because of the denim and the rips. I can see why it used to be your 'uniform'.

I am so glad you are keeping one for yourself and I know what you mean about clearing being therapeutic!

I never thought about braiding before. Ever since I chanced upon the notion of layering hair, I've been getting it layered in wispy layers. If I skip a month, I get what I call 'lion mane syndrome'.

fookaDESIGNS said...

Oh yes, I would love to see how you cut your hair. I was just thinking the other day that I need a haircut which I put off every time that it needs to be done because i hate it so much. If I could do it myself I think I would feel much better about it! :) This look is great btw!

lol how cute! I love the simple style :) My BF does like it when I am sitting around in my jeans and school hoodie (usually most saturday Mornings). I am s glad that you are selling these coats for so cheap. Most people sell things for way more than I can afford, I like looking at youe Etsy because the prices are reasonable, and you have very cute stuff!!

I have banned myself from buying anything until next month, but I am planning on shopping your store when Feb hits. (I have to set myself a limit).

also Big favor! can you hold these for me until next week? unless someone else has already asked.

my BF llikes my staple too...leggings, vintage boots and oversized tee... there is comfort food and comfort outfit :)

I used to pride myself on dressing both fun/funky AND a bit low maintenance - then I moved into a little town in the mountains and started working from home. My style became soooooooooooooooooooo (a million o's if i could) ho-hum. I've aways LOVED fashion and I really enjoy your blog. I started my own a while ago in hopes that it'd bring me out of my fashion rut (andfancyfree.com). We'll see! Also, great coat to keep. Will look perfect in NY. :)

I would love to know what your individual pieces of clothing are... like, what brand are the jeans and where did you get them, etc. Those jeans are fabulous.
